The company

Pixomondo is one of the world’s leading independent providers of visual effects and virtual production. Founded in Frankfurt in 2001, the company has expanded to several offices across the world from Germany to Canada. Famous for the fire-breathing dragons in Game of Thrones, the space scenes of Star Trek and the high-octane car chases in The Fast and the Furious, Pixomondo has won several major awards, including an Academy Award®, Emmy Awards and Visual Effects Society Awards.

The investment

Mayfair invested in Pixomondo in July 2018 to support the business in a journey of professionalisation to enable the business to benefit from the structural tailwinds in the large and rapidly expanding visual effects market. This has been driven by the expansion in content creation, especially from platforms such as Netflix, Amazon and Apple, as well as the growing reliance on visual effects as a high quality and cost-effective means of production. The investment in Pixomondo included additional funding to support Pixomondo’s push into virtual production, a new frontier in filmmaking which allows productions to be filmed in front of giant LED screens using motion capture and game engine technology.

Pixomondo was sold to Sony Pictures Entertainment, a subsidiary of Sony Group Corporation, in October 2022, delivering a strong investment outcome and full exit for Mayfair. The deal allows Pixomondo to take advantage of Sony’s global reach and industry-leading technology to further advance its virtual production capabilities and alongside Sony Pictures Imageworks and Sony Innovation Studios, enhances Sony’s credentials in virtual production whilst also creating collaboration opportunities with Sony Electronics.

Our partnership

Mayfair has supported the business in several areas including:

  • Geographic expansion, including the opening of a London office in 2021.
  • Design and implementation of a range of process improvements to improve controls and drive scalability, including the implementation of a new Enterprise Resource Planning system.
  • The creation, development and implementation of a comprehensive tech & data strategy for the business.
  • Building a succession plan for the founder of the business and strengthening the company’s line-up of senior management.
  • Investing behind Pixomondo’s push into Virtual Production which significantly enhanced the strategic positioning of the company.

“Pixomondo was looking for a partner to help build the systems and processes required to allow the business to scale. Not only has Mayfair provided exemplary support, they have also backed us to grow the business more aggressively by providing additional funding to support our push into virtual production.“
